As a software developer by trade, I like to promote self reliance and independence. When moving into a new job, the initial period is a learning experience where you learn as much as you can from the rest of the team. The bigger the team/project, the longer the ramp up time. Eventually, you're off on your own.

Prepping is another form of self-reliance and independence. In the event of some kind of disaster, you want to be prepared to survive through the event. I am not a hard core prepper myself, but my wife really wants to have a stash available for that time. Nothing major but we live in New England and big snow storms and power outages are the norm. Typically, no hurricanes, but flooding isn't out of the question either.
